THE majority of hotels in Majorca are planning to close during this month after a busy summer season, and a higher than expected number of hotel guests in September and in the first few weeks of October. Thanks to an increase in the number of hotel guests in September and so far in October some hotels, like those in Paguera and Playa de Palma, will end up closing later than last year. Therefore, the island has not seen the massive closedown of hotels, such as what happened around this time last year.
The high hotel occupation rates will ensure that hotels in certain resorts “will last until the end of this month”, said the President of the Majorca Hotel Federation, Pedro Cañellas. As a result people will witness that the hotels will start to close towards the end of this month, he added.
After then, at the end of November, there could be perhaps between ten and fifteen percent of the hotels still open to welcome out-of-season travellers.

It will be the larger chain hotels which will close first, followed by the more smaller and private hotels, which are likely to close for the winter a little later, confirmed Pedro Cañellas. The hotel figures for this year will be similar to those registered last year, with increases experienced in September and October, thinks the President of the Majorca Hotel Federation. Furthermore, the Minister for Tourism, Joan Flaquer, said that this year the increased number of tourists spent more money whilst here on holiday, when compared to similar statistics registered in 2004.
