PALMA
DRIVERS down the Avenidas in Palma are complaining on a daily basis that they are being trapped in queues caused by the introduction of bicycle lanes. “The cycle lanes have converted the Avenidas into a disaster area,” said a disgruntled city resident yesterday. “The signposting is really bad, we're wasting so much time held up in traffic. It wasn't necessary to change things so drastically - there's no place to park at all, motorists have been left without any rights at all.” His views echo those of many others.

Apparently Calle Jeroni Antich is a point of real congestion as cars attempting to access it from Via Alemania have to cross the bus and taxi lane. During the rush hour, queues start to build up in Via Alemania as Calle Jeroni Antich quickly becomes jammed with cycles and vehicles blocking Plaza de los Patines. The mêlée spills over into Via Roma and is potentially dangerous.

Criticism of the bicycle lanes in the Avenidas is mounting with residents and users saying that the facility for two-wheeled travellers is hardly used . Drivers, meanwhile are spending more and more time sitting in queues because one of the lanes of Palma's traffic “arteries” has been eliminated. Difficulties are also now being experienced in accessing parallel streets.
