PALMA/VALENCIA
THE Managing Director of the Majorcan Railway Service (SFM), Jaume Jaime Oliver, was in Valencia yesterday to see for himself how the city's tram-style urban rail system operates as a precursor to the construction of the Manacor to Arta rail extension planned to run along similar lines.

His fact-finding visit to Valencia in the company of SFM Infrastructure chief, Pedro Sintes, followed a tour of the German multi-national Vossloh factory in the municipality of Albuixech from which the Balearic company has recently purchased six tram-style train carriages. The new rolling stock is similar to that operating in Alicante and will be used for the new SFM rail service between Manacor and Arta. Having satisfied themselves of the advantages of investment in a rail system which provides highly accessible and integrated urban travel, Jaime and Sintes explored how the train-tram interconnected with the Valencia's metro service. They made the comparison with Palma where connections to underground rail facilities already exist and concluded that this type of transport perfectly suits SFM's requirements for the project linking Manacor with Arta.
