BRITISH singer Annie Lennox, who has a home on the island, has given her full support to the Salvem Mallorca (Save Majorca) campaign, which has organised a huge party in Santa Maria on October 22. She told the organisers by phone that she could not attend the party because of recording commitments, but she sent a message of support, which is reproduced here. Lennox signed the manifesto when the committee was originally set up and has said that she will attend the collection of signatures to back up the draft law which the committee hopes to present to the Balearic Parliament, to stop the destruction of the island. Lou Reed is another international star who supports the campaign.
Save Majorca is an umbrella group which includes ten associations and committees such as GOB, Friends of the Earth and Autovias No (which is spearheading the campaign against motorways). Their purpose is to stop the destruction of the island.
The party on October 22 will include a concert by some of the top Majorcan performers such as singer Maria del Mar Bonet, Victor Uris and the groups Antonia Font and Cap.pela, who sing without musical accompaniment. There will also be a dance session with a DJ, and a video performance with Renato Sanjordi.
The organisers will also be showing an audiovisual called Destruction in Progress.
In addition to all this there will be a fair, with local food and drinks, and proposals for a more sustainable Majorca.
The event is due to start at 6pm and continue until aroound midnight.
A spokesman for GOB said that they hoped to collect a minimum of 10'000 signatures for their draft law proposal.
He added that among the projects the committee opposes is the sinking of the frigate Baleares off Calvia to create an artificial reef. He claims that it is not necessary as the coastline has plenty of suitable habitats for fish.
