THE Balearic Government yesterday warned that the islands are losing their ranking when it comes to the highest number of mooring spaces in Spain.
The islands will lose their second place to make way for Andalucia and Valencia, who have increased the number of available moorings recently. Top place is still held by Catalonia, which has the most moorings in Spain. These comments were made at the yachting summit, The new challenges for the touristic-sporting nautical sectors in the 21st century, which was held at the CAEB (Balearic Business Federation) conference hall, which 140 representatives from European nautical companies attended. Balearics will continue with the total of 19'561 mooring spaces, whereas Andalucia has plans to increase the 13'413 spaces to 25'413, and Valencia from 17'716 to 27'716. However, it is still Catalonia which leads the tables, which currently has 30'492 mooring spaces with plans tp increase this to 35'492. The yachting industry in the Balearic Islands generates approximately 450 million euros each year, with an estimated 30'000 boats moored in the ports, a figure which increases to 38'000 boats in the summer.
