EVERY year the Spanish eat 3'544 million home-prepared filled rolls and sandwiches, according to a study done by TNS Worldpanel about eating habits, which continually measures the consumption of food and drink in the home. Rolls are present in eight percent of Spanish meals, which is way behind other countries where the “sandwich culture” is much more developed, as in Great Britain where the percentage is 12.5 percent. At the same time, the report says that the roll now forms an essential part of our daily menus, as more that 50 percent of people eat them at home, the “time” factor being the main reason for choosing this form of meal. It adds that 20 percent of rolls are consumed as snacks and some 35 percent with dinner.
The report says that the production industry has warned of the growth of this type of meal and because of this the roll is beginning to form part of the prepared meals industry.
