THE question has been asked in the Spanish press as to why it is seen as a show of solidarity for the Balearics to take just 10 immigrant children.
In general the political parties and groups questioned want to see how the agreement with the Spanish Government turns out.
The Spanish Socialists was the party which was most critical. The Council of Majorca, who will be the ones taking charge of the children, say that their centres are full and the Balearic Government says that it's more than other regions with more resources are doing. Immigrant organisations are waiting for the agreement to be reached.
In the Balearic Ministry for Immigration there will be a meeting with the Spanish Minister for Social Affairs but it is seen as unacceptable for islands to take more than 10 children. Officially there is no word about what the Spanish Government is willing to pay to support these children. Could the Balearics do more? Immigrant organisations insist that it is too soon to answer this and that any soldarity proposal is welcome.
