THE number of people flying in and out of Palma airport during the first nine months of this year was 9 percent down on the numbers registered for the same period in 2008, reported the Spanish Airports Authority (AENA) yesterday.
In the same publication, AENA said that 18 million people had flown in and out of Spain in September this year, 5.2 percent down on 2008.
So last month, Palma airport, with 2'512'351 passengers registered in September, became the Spanish airport with the second highest number of travellers for the month, just beating old rival El Prat airport in Barcelona with 2'512'294 which was 6.4 percent down on September last year. Palma also beat Malaga (1'201'654, -5.5%); Alicante (955'053, +1.1%); Ibiza (658'161, +1.4%); and Gran Canaria with 639'731, -12%). The only airport with greater passenger numbers during September was Barajas in Madrid which claimed 4'243'629, 0.1 percent more than the same period last year.
