RAIN and storms hit the Balearic Islands as predicted yesterday, although they were a lot less intense than expected.
Even though the rainfall was not extreme, the islands once again showed that even a small drop of rain generates many problems on the roads, with several traffic jams and accidents happening around Majorca. Two examples of these road delays happened on the airport motorway and the road to the Balearic Islands University. At the former, a small road accident caused a big traffic jam. At the latter, the roadworks and rain combined together produced long road delays.
The skies did open yesterday, but not with as much force as forecasted by the weather stations.
The maximum rainfall fell at the Capdepera station yesterday with 35.8 litres per square metre. Other areas received less rain. Only the mountain regions of Lluc and Alfabia, broke the 10 litres per square metre barrier. In the rest of Majorca rainfall ranged between 2.8 and 4.6 litres per square metre.
Wind speeds however did reach significant levels, such as 52 kilometres per hour in Alfabia.
Many other towns were blasted with windspeeds reaching 40 kilometres per hour. Temperatures suffered a notable nose dive yesterday, with maximum of 21 degrees recorded in Portocolom. The forecast today is a cloudy outlook, which could be accompanied with storms.
Temperatures will increase slightly and wind speeds will be moderate.
Less rain than predicted but still traffic jams
