A giant pyramid made up of 350 kilos of bread, erected by the Balearic Association of Bakers and Pastry Makers to celebrate World Bread Day, drew crowds and comments in Plaza Mayor in Palma yesterday.
The pyramid, which measured 1.8 metres high and 2.8 metres wide, acted as an attraction from where nutritionists were handing out titbits and leaflets explaining the health benefits of eating bread. The venture was part of a wider campaign by bread marketing association Incerhpan and Central Government called Eat Bread Every Day - to try to encourage people to do just that.
The bread pyramid has not been appearing just in Palma but in other Spanish cities. World Bread Day also coincides with World Food Day, established by the United National in 1979.
Experts, say the nutritionists, recommend daily consumption of between 220 and 250 grammes spread out over different meal times, the equivalent of a French loaf. Surprisingly, Spain is now one of the countries of Europe where bread is eaten the least.
