PALMA
EMAYA, Palma's water and drainage company, has launched an operattion aimed at cleaning all the drains in Palma as a preventative measure against the increase in rainfall which is usually experienced in the last few months of the year in the city.
According to EMAYA sources, the work will centre on the maintenance and conservation of the network which, in accordance with the inventory taken by EMAYA, has a total of 23'944 drains which are periodically revised and cleaned.
During last year a total of 20'863 drains were cleaned, out of which were extracted 489'000 kilos of rubbish and mud which were sent to the Son Reus rubbish tip.
At the same time repairs were made to more than 276 drains which were found to be damaged while they were being cleaned, and grilles and covers were renewed on other drains. At the moment the drain cleaning teams are operating in the Son Cladera area.
To clean the drains and sewers, EMAYA has a specific team of 15 operators and a foreman, in addition to the support of the rest of the operators in the Drainage service, for specialised work such as cleaning lorries for clearing obstructions, and hydrodynamic cleaning, and teams for construction and emergencies.
At the same time as this work is being carried out, there will be campaigns of inspection and maintenance of the large pipes, as it is in these stretches that the rainwater does not empty out into the torrentes (water courses) or the sea, so it is necessary to make sure they are in optimal condition so that they can take the amount of rainwater wherever it falls, said the same sources.
Palma has a network especially designed to collect sewerage, a network for collecting rainwater, and mixed networks, making Palma a city with a separated network.
