STAFF REPORTER IN order to prevent schoolchildren falling prey to crime, the 14 municipalities which go to make up the central Pla (plain) of Majorca are going to have official police visits to their schools to help pupils confront social and educational difficulties.

Such matters might include tackling bullying, respecting safety restrictions within the school building and road safety outside it.
The secondary schools in Sineu and Porreres are furthermore investing in a police tutor, an officer with a mandate to cope with matters beyond the reach of professional teaching staff such as truancy, persistent absenteeism, and alcohol and narcotics awareness.

The policy has been agreed within the framework of the Under-age Policing Plan developed by the Balearic Public Safety Institute (ISPIB).
In order for the plan to become reality, weekly sessions are now being held to train up the police staff . “The aim of the project is very much a preventive one,” said Balearic Interior Ministry Director Sebastià Amengual yesterday. “It's also something that needs to be networked so that schools become aware if there are any incidents happening which need to be brought to police attention,” he added.

He explained that an advantage of having police working in collaboration with the schools is that some pupils might live in one municipality but go to school in another. “We can't operate in isolation,” Amengual said.

The Interior Ministry Director said that “previously, the coastal areas of the island were those where there were the least problems in schools but now there is little to differentiate those by the sea or inland.” Police Coordinator, Rafel Covas said that it's also very important that the parents know what's going on in schools.
