IN the space of a week, an epidemic triggered by a virus, active between the Balearics and the coast of Valencia, killed six dolphins in waters off the Straits of Gibraltar during August. Analyses carried out on the animals, classified as dolphins of the type Stenella Coeruleoalba were confirmed by veterinary surgeon Alvaro Garcia de los Rios. He said that findings had confirmed they had been killed by a virus. According to the vet's report, the animals which had been found off the coast of the Spanish city of Ceuta in North Africa, were not the only ones to have succumbed. The epidemic had also claimed victims off the coast of Catalonia and other parts of North Africa.
