EMT (Palma's bus company) will, by the end of the year, have carried nearly 37 million passengers, which is nearly 2 million more than they carried in 2005.
The figures were revealed by the deputy mayor of Citizen Security and President of EMT, Alvaro Gijon, who said that the company now has a fleet of 165 buses, which will enable them to improve frequencies. He also announced that, at the start of November, the new contactless citizen's card would be able to be used on all of EMT's busses.
So far the company has received some 110'000 applications for the new smart card.
He confirmed that at the end of November EMT would be starting its third circular route, line 29 (urban circular) which will connect the hospital of Son Dureta with the districts of Son Dameto, Son Cotoner, Es Camp Redo, Son Oliva, Eusebi Estada, Pere Garau, the Poligono de Llevant, the Autovia de Llevant, the Paseo Maritimo, Son Espanyol, Son Armadams, and Sa Teulera. He also repeated the intention of EMT to have 47 new drivers on duty next month to add to the 24 who started work in July. This will give them a total number of 466 drivers.
