Those members of the general public who have not been affected by the new centre right Partido Popular's austerity measures are certainly going to notice them over Christmas.

Yesterday, council engineers began putting up the Christmas lights around the capital but the council announced that the budget for this year's Christmas lights decoration has been slashed by 40 percent in an attempt to save 200'000 euros.

The lights will be switched on on December 2 and remain in place, apart from the old part of Palma, until San Sebastià, the city's saint's day, on January 20.

The lights are also going to be switched on for shorter periods to save even more money.
From Sunday to Thursday, the lights will be on between 5.30pm and 9.30pm, by which time most of the shops will have closed.
On Fridays and Saturdays, however, the lights will stay on until midnight.
On December 24 and 31 and January 5, the lights will remain on until 6am.
Council sources said yesterday that engineers began putting the lights up on October 1 and they should all be in place by the end of this month.
No new lights are being used this year.
Apart from those which are broken, all the decorations will be the same as last year.
Last year, the Socialist-led coalition council spent 456'156 euros on Christmas decorations and lights, this year, the council will spend 200'000 because of the huge debts the former council left behind when voted out of office.
