PALMA
MAJORCA has been named as one of the top island holiday destinations in Europe.
Tourists from across the world voted it sixth in the Top 10 European islands category of the prestigious Conde Nast readers' choice awards.
Thus year's 23rd annual Readers' Choice Awards include 1'060 winners in a wide range of categories, elected by 25'9116 readers whose passion is travel.
The ratings are stratospheric: 281 places and properties achieve scores of 90.0 or above, from Art Nouveau palaces to South Pacific bungalows to one perfect jungle camp in Thailand.
But, closer to home, both Majorca and Ibiza have made the top European island destinations.
The poll was topped by Greece's Cyclades, a chain of 220 islands that includes Mykonos.
They beat Bozcaada, and the Aegean islands belonging to Turkey.
Ibiza - popular with clubbers and families - came third, ahead of the Italian island of Capri.
The Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, at the edge of Europe in the Atlantic Ocean was in fifth, ahead of the traditional family holiday island of Majorca.
The ratings have been welcomed by the Balearic tourism authorities who have witnessed the island and Palma ranked very highly in a number of customer surveys and market research over the past couple of weeks.
WEATHER
However, Majorca should keep an eye on the Isle of Skye, for example. Not exactly famous for its great weather and beaches, but clever European marketing campaigns appear to have caught the eye of the domestic and international markets.
