STAFF REPORTER CARLOS Hidalgo, the brother of the disgraced former mayor of Andratx, Eugenio Hidalgo, said yesterday that he was not aware when he purchased a plot of land for private development in the district that it was in fact rural terrain categorised as being of special natural interest - and therefore out of bounds to builders.

Carlos asserted that contrary to alleged reports his brother had not wanted to build a restaurant on the site, but had only wanted to construct a family home out of the building that had already existed on the site since before 1950 and that the deeds of the property were consistent with it being located on urban, as opposed to rural land.
