HUNDREDS of drivers remained trapped in long queues yesterday afternoon on Palma's Via Cintura in the direction of the airport.
An accident occurred at 2pm at Kilometre 3.8 near Amanecer. Fifteen minutes later, there was another accident 1.7 kilometres further along the road opposite Carrefour. It was at that point that a queue of vehicles began to form which stretched for several kilometres and blocked the accesses to the ringroad. The jam lasted for two hours. The first accident involved a Peugeot 406 taxi and a breakdown vehicle. No injuries were reported in this first incident although debris spread over the road. Guardia Civil arrived immediately to ascertain the causes of the collision and firemen spread sand over the surface of the road. Fifteen minutes later, also in the direction of the airport, a little before the exit for Valldemossa, there was another accident involving a Honda motorcycle, a Renault Kangoo van and a BMW 320 private car, the driver of which suffered serious injuries and was transferred to hospital.
