PALMA
HALF a million euros is to be allocated by the Balearic government to building a professional training centre for workers in the construction industry, said Jaume Carbonero, the regional minister for Housing and Public Works yesterday.
Balearic President Francesc Antich was present at yesterday's signing of an agreement between Carbonero and the President of the Construction Workers Foundation, Manuel Gomez. The regional government is providing over 80 percent of the money it will take to build the 570 square metre centre, the rest will be provided by the Foundation. The project will offer an opportunity for work for some 30 experts in construction training. Antich said that the training centre will provide the opportunity for workers in the industry in the Balearics to strengthen their specialist knowledge and thereby become more competitive as employees in a sector which has been particularly badly hit by the recession. Antich also said that the training of construction workers in the region will focus on the reform of already-existing buildings as opposed to the construction of new ones.
