PALMA
THE conservative Partido Popular opposition party was against the ropes in the Balearics last night because its Mayor of Lluchmajor, Lluc Tomas, resigned after being sentenced to three years in jail and banned from holding public office for eight years after being found guilty by the Palma High Court of misappropriating public funds.

This is the latest in a series of corruption scandals in which the PP has been embroiled and the leader of the United Left in the Balearics, Joan Llado, claimed that Thomas's behaviour proves that “corruption is systemic” in the Balearic PP.

A former Llucmajor councillor, Joaquin Rabasco was sentenced to six years in jail and banned from public office for a further eight after being found guilty on two counts. His former secretary Maria del Mar Aldao was sentenced to two years in prison for her involvement in the alleged hiring by the local council of four different companies to organise fiestas for the local authority which apparently belonged to either Rabasco or the secretary.
