THE weather played havoc on several residents living in and around the Port of Andratx Friday night, causing damage to several boats and dinghys, as well as destroying parts of the newly inaugurated lighthouse quay. Whereas other parts of the island seemed to be free from the devasting winds and waves, the Port of Andratx was once more on its own to face some dangerous weather conditions. Boats which had been safely and securely tied up in the marina were boucing around from one side to the other, even the heavier fishing boats saw a fair amount of movement. In addition, several yachts in the harbour along the waterfront quay by the restaurants and bars were ripped from their mooring lines and rescued early in the morning by their owners or friends. Yachts which were securely fastened to underwater swinging mooring lines were also shaken from their secure place for the first time this year and at least two landed up against the jagged rocks. One speed boat was completely destroyed by the weather and all the owner could unfortunately do was salvage what little was left of it.
All over the port, bits from boats, fences and rubble were floating in the sea or had been swept up on shore. For those living on yachts in the harbour, they did indeed have a bumpy night, with many fearing for the safety of their expensive belongings.
