Palma.—A minor earthquake was registered in Majorca in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The quake struck at 00.05am under the municipality of Sant Joan .
It registered 2.1 on the Richter scale and was felt by some residents in Sant Joan.
Rosa Maria Mateos, head of the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute in the Balearics, explained yesterday afternoon that the quake occurred some five Kilometres under ground which is why parts of Sant Joan felt the tremor.

However, she said that the quake had been “very superficial”. Mateos said that the minor tremor was not unusual, in fact she said it was quite normal, explaining that minor tremors of this scale are reported two to three times per year in Majorca.

Apparently there are a number of active fault lines in Majorca, in particular under Palma, Sencelles and Campos as well as Sant Joan.
