.—Balearic consumers are expected to spend an average of 475 euros extra this Christmas, a consumers federation predicted yesterday.

It seems the festive season will, at least for a few weeks, eclipse the deep recession in the region and the country are going through, with locals not expected to shy away from spoiling their children and families.

Consumers consider that the most important thing over Christmas is to enjoy a good meal with their families and within their possibilities provide the young ones with presents.

On the other hand spending on lottery tickets and going out is not seen as "essential" and they are prepared to cut costs in these areas, just as they have done since 2008.
