JOSE Manuel Durao Barroso, the President of the European Commission is to chair discussions on EU territory in Palma on 18th January , regional government spokesperson, Joana Barcelo said yesterday.
It will be the first meeting to be held in the Balearics during Spain's six-month presidency of the European Union from the start of next year.
Also at the meeting in January, together with representatives of key European institutions, will be the President of the EU Regions Committee, Luc Van den Brande and Central Government Vice-president, Manuel Chaves. Barcelo confirmed that the discussions will be held in the Almudaina Palace.
Around 100 people, she said will be discussing the future of European policy with particular reference to its regions. The Balearic Islands forms part of a western Mediterranean Euroregion. Apart from the January meeting, said Barcelo, there will be others related to Spain's EU presidency - between seven and nine are reportedly planned.
