FIVE people, including a couple and their two children, were rushed to hospital on Friday night after being involved in a multiple traffic accident near Algaida along the Manacor Road.
According to witnesses and the traffic police, the accident was caused by a young Romanian who sparked panic and terror by driving along the stretch of road the wrong way.
A full investigation into why the Romanian was driving in the opposite direction to the traffic is underway but what is clear is that he first collided, apparently head on, with a white van which flipped on to its side.
Then, he collided with the vehicle carrying the couple and their children and a third vehicle. The Guardia Civil Highway Patrol, the National Police, fire fighters and paramedics were on the scene within minutes and all five of the victims were immediately rushed to hospital in Palma.
One theory is that the driver exited the nearby roundabout in the wrong carriage and drove on some 14 kilometres before encountering the vehicles coming in the opposite direction.
