THE Balearic Government has identified 355 beaches in the Balearics for safety improvements.
The Balearic Minister for the Interior, Jose Maria Rodriguez, said in Parliament yesterday that the Balearic Government had made huge strides in beach safety, highlighting that in 2005 his department identified 355 bathing areas needing safety improvements. Of these, 217 were considered low risk, 101 medium risk and 37 high risk. In answer to a question tabled by the PP (Partido Popular), Rodriguez said that during the month of December his Ministry is building a web page which people can consult to find out about the climatic conditions of the region's beaches. He also commented that all these measures form a part of the Beach Safety Plan 2005, an initiative which had seen the training of 23 experts in beach security, 14 in Majorca, seven in Ibiza and Formentera and two in Minorca. Finally he said that the Balearic Ministry is producing a Beach Plan 2006-2010, which will have a budget of six million euros including grants to districts to improve bathing safety in the Balearics.
