A large number of hotels are opening their doors for business this month and the holiday season is starting. It is quite amazing but finally someone, somewhere has listened to our pleas about more winter tourists and is taking action. It is very unusual to see so many hotels opening in February and it should mean that finally the islands are on the right track. All we want now is the weather to improve. There are some more encouraging signs. The Mayor of Palma, Mateo Isern, has held talks with officials from two British airlines who are interested in linking Britain with Majorca, 10 months of the year. It has taken one of the worst recessions in Spanish history for winter tourism to get off the ground again and it is a case of better late than never. The season starts now and should end in early November. Now, obviously there are still plenty of hotels which are closed and few winter flights but we are gradually seeing a move towards Majorca becoming an all-year-around holiday destination. Most people agree that there is plenty happening on the island over the winter from cycling events to your traditional fiestas. The Balearic government should continue to stress the fact that Majorca is open for business during the winter. They must also promote the island across the globe. I sincerely hope that we have seen the last of those long winter months when everything was closed. Let us hope we are moving in the right direction.
Summer at last
