Palma.—A Canadian frigate with a reputation for major drug busts arrived in Palma yesterday.
The HMCS Toronto, is a multi role patrol boat protecting the interests of the Canadian navy.
The vessel which combines traditional anti-submarine capabilities with systems to deal with surface and air threats is mainly assigned to the Atlantic Ocean but made headlines over the last few years for several major drugs seizures in the Indian Ocean particularly in the Arabian sea.
The region is a key shipping route for boats trafficking drugs, usually to be sold to finance terrorism groups and organisations.
The HMCS Toronto was involved in one of the largest ever drug busts at sea when she intercepted a boat transporting some 500 kilogrammes of heroin with a street value between $150-million and $250-million off the East Coast of Africa.
