THE airlines are beginning to sound like a broken record;there is little demand for flights during the Winter season to Majorca. Since we launched our campaign for more flights over the so-called low season it has been backed by hundreds of people from holiday home owners and tourists in Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia and expatriates on the island. I suspect that if fares were competitively priced and well promoted there would be demand because everyone wants to come to Majorca. Ten years ago there were plenty of Winter flights from across Britain because tour firms operated Winter programmes. These so-called Winter/sun holidays were popular and kept many hotels open especially in the Calvia area. But all of a sudden the Winter programme was cancelled and as a direct result Winter flights were also reduced. So what has changed? As far as I know we still have 300 days of sunshine a year and Majorca remains a relatively cheap destination. And we know for a fact that it is popular because seven million tourists come here every year. So if there is demand for hundreds of flights during the Summer I suspect there is demand for dozens of flights during the Winter. And also not all tourists come to Majorca for the sun. So as the President of the Tourist Board told the Bulletin recently it is time for the industry to sit down together and put their cards on the table and decide on a plan of action for Winter tourism.
