Calvia.—Calvia’s Partido Popular council yesterday voted in favour of the new crackdown on pub crawls as well as tough fines for litter bugs.

On the eve of the tourist season, the council also approved a series of new laws to improve cleanliness of the municipality, in particular the holiday’s resorts and noise.

Stricter controls on acoustic pollution are going to be introduced under the Noise and Vibration law which will affect bars and night clubs as well as construction companies which have to scale back their operations during the peak Summer months. With regards to tougher waste controls, the illegal disposal of industrial waste could result in fines as high as 1.750,000 euros while someone caught tossing away a cigarette butt or waste paper in a public place could be hit with a maximum fine of 900 euros.

However, the biggest shake up is the new crackdown on pub crawls with any one wishing to organise such activities having to meet a series of requisites such as applying for a license, taking out civil responsibility insurance, paying a special tax, revealing all his or her fiscal details and addresses and all the guides on the pub crawl will have to wear reflective clothing and a special badge awarded by the council which states they are official ly recognised.
