THE Balearics could become one of the chief cycling holiday destinations in the Mediterranean but the Balearic Government must ensure that the roads are equipped for our pedal-powered tourists.   There are not enough cycle paths or even clearly defined cycling routes. Drivers need to be warned that cyclists are ahead  and be urged to reduce their speed. One of the reasons why the north of the island during the winter months is such a haven for cyclists is because the roads are quiet. It is as simple as that. A road without traffic is a joy for any cyclist and this is one of the reasons why the north of the island has attracted the top teams from all over Europe. The Balearics needed to exploit this market but at the same time spend some money. The President of the Balearic Government, Jose Ramon Bauza said yesterday that cycling and sporting tourism was key for the islands´ future. The government should therefore be investing more money in cycle paths which should link the whole island. As we all know millions of euros were spent on cycle paths in Palma which are hardly used but there are few cycle tracks in areas which are used by cyclists. Also, perhaps it might be an idea if the Balearic Government advised cyclists of the laws of the roads and of areas where special attention is needed. Cycling could save Majorca as a winter holiday destination but as usual the Balearic Government needs to do its homework.
