Palma.—After a fresh wave of protests against oil and gas prospecting in waters off the Balearics and the Canary Islands, the President of the Majorcan Hotel Federation, Aurelio Vazquez, yesterday said that he intends to try and force a united front with colleagues in the Canary Islands to stop prospecting from going ahead.
Central government in Madrid has recently given energy company Repsol the green light to begin exploring for gas and oil off the Canary Islands, much to the annoyance of the tourist industry, while here in the Balearics efforts are being made to have permits issued by the former Socialist government to British energy firm Cairn Energy to prospect in Balearic waters, to the revoked.
