Palma.—Two people died early yesterday after their yacht caught fire while at anchor in Porto Colom.
The vessel was anchored at about 100 metres from the coastline, when the fire broke out.
The fire brigade and the other emergency services were quickly on the scene but the flames spread quickly due to the presence of inflamable items aboard the vessel.
The fire brigade with the support of Guarda Civil divers and other maritime units managed to extinguish the blaze by about 3a.m. Later yesterday morning, the boat, which had now sunk, was pulled closer to the shoreline allowing the Guardia Civil and the fire brigade to carry out a complete investigation. Their enquiries were still on-going last night as they sought to establish the names, ages and nationalities of the victims and the reason why the fire broke out in the first place.
Scores of people gathered on the shoreline to watch the emergency operation including the local mayor and other council officials.
