Palma.—The ruling Partido Popular said that the jailing of one of its senior former ministers clearly shows that no-one was above the law.
Jaume Matas, ex-Balearic President and former Minister for the Environment in Madrid, went to jail in Segovia on Monday charged with using his position in public office for his own benefit. The charge relates to the construction of the Palma Arena velodrome. Matas could serve up to nine month in jail and he still faces a number of other court cases on corruption charges. Matas won a landslide victory for the Partido Popular in the Balearics in 2003 and narrowly missed being re-elected again in 2007.
