Editorial: Quietly forgotten

THE Balearic government had been planning to launch an awareness campaign through the British tabloids calling on British tourists to behave themselves while they are on holiday.  The Balearic government was also planning to launch a good conduct guide island-wide, similar to the one which already exists in Palma. Now, both proposals appear to have quietly abandoned. The good behaviour campaign was going to cost 500,000 euros and would involve placing advertisements in some of Britain´s principal newspapers. The Spanish and Balearic governments even had discussions with the British ambassador to Spain  over the subject. But that was July and now we are in September and nothing more has been said. So I think at this stage we can safely say that no more action will be taken. Why? If it was a good idea in July surely it should still be valid in September. I suspect that the on-going police investigation in Magalluf at the moment will have altered things slightly but why did the government get cold feet? Putting advertisements in newspapers calling on tourists to have a good time in Majorca but at the same time watch their manners was not a very good idea in the first place. In fact it was a terrible idea. The Balearic government would have effectively scored an own goal. So thankfully the Balearic government has seen sense and has decided to abandon this idea. There is plenty of work to do in the resorts first.
