Editorial: Vote:YES

I went into this Scottish referendum hoping that Scotland would say “No” because I believed that we are better together. But like thousands of others across Scotland and possibly England and Wales I do believe that a Yes vote would now be a better result. I have seen plenty of flag-waving from the Yes campaign and plenty of rhetoric in favour of independence but  I have seen little of the Union flag at rallies from the No campaign and if the No campaign does triumph it will be as a result of the economic argument rather than the desire to remain British and be part of the United Kingdom.  So do the people of Scotland want to be British? The economic argument to remain part of the United Kingdom is very clear, if you vote  Yes it will hit you in the pocket. But apart from Gordon Brown and dare I say it, David Cameron, I haven´t seen the passion which the Yes campaign reflects on the No side. This shouldn´t be  an argument about economics, this should be a referendum on wanting to form part of the Union and being proud of what it stands for. I suspect that Scotland could stand on its own two feet economically and perhaps the country would prosper because it would be a new dawn. But the scars from this referendum battle will take a long time to heal. The damage has been done. With a very heavy heart I do believe that perhaps Scotland should vote for independence and become a new trading partner and key ally of the rest of the United Kingdom.
