Pollensa.—The biggest bell of Sant Antoni Abad church in Sa Pobla returned this week to the church spire, its original place, after being remelted in Valencia.
And after 14 years, the tunes of Ave Maria were yesterday heard for the first time in the Majorcan municipality.
It took a group of workers and a large crane to put the 1,200 kilo solid bronze bell back in the church spire, a process which attracted the attention of several locals.
Sa Pobla’s priest Joan Pons explained that before the bell was sent to Valencia in April, “it was taken down and left for a month inside the church” so that the “faithful could have a closer look at it”.
The bell returned to Sa Pobla in late July where the same situation was again repeated so that those interested could see at first hand the renovation process it had under gone, before it was put up again.
The remelting of the bell was initially expected to cost around 19,000 euros but that fee went up to 22, 000 in the end, a situation Pons explained, will not prevent the church from keeping its obligations.
