Calvia.—Three candidates have thrown their hat into the ring to succeed Manu Onieva, the present Mayor of Calvia who is standing down at the next local elections in the spring next year. The ruling Partido Popular, which gained the lion´s share of the so-called expat vote in the last elections, are in the process of electing their candidate for Mayor who will lead the party into the elections. The three people who have indicated that they could stand are Jose Maul Ruiz, (who has the support of most Partido Popular councillors), Idoia Ribas and Fernando Palmer. Also, there is speculation that more candidates could come forward.
There are reports that some members of the Partido Popular branch in Calvia would like to see Balearic leader and party President,Jose Ramon Bauza, put his weight behind one of the candidates. If this does not prove to be the case then there will be an election with all Partido Popular members voting for their candidate. Manu Onieva announced last month that he was stepping down for personal reasons and was leaving politics. He took over from Carlos Delgado at the last elections.
