Palma.—At 6am yesterday morning, the Council of Majorca closed off one of the three lanes on the airport motorway in the direction of Palma to make way for the construction of the new Molinar access road and caused traffic chaos.
The Council of Majorca has installed diversions and provided alternative routes but it seemed to make little difference yesterday morning when rush hour came to a total grid lock and the fast lane is going to remain closed until the end of January, at the earliest, when work on the new access road to Molinar is due to have been completed.
At peak periods of the morning and afternoon, tail backs stretched for over eight kilometres and yesterday morning, a car broke down near where the road construction site is while there was an accident near Es Pil.lari, which only added to the nightmare for drivers trying to get into Palma.
The Council of Majorca has advised drivers to only use the final stretch of the airport motorway into Palma if they are heading to the Paseo Maritimo or the lower area of the Avenidas in an attempt to try and ease the traffic.
