Palma.—Palma shopkeepers have slammed the TUI marathon and the Kart Championship on Palma´s seafront because both events distracted cruise ship passengers away from their stores.
In a communique yesterday the Association of Shopkeepers called for more co-ordination and asked for these events not to coincide with the visits of cruise ships to the Port of Palma.
“Hundreds of cruise passengers did not venture into town because most the marathon and kart championships were taking place close to the cathedral and therefore kept them out of the city centre,” the association said.
But the announcement yesterday is not expected to be well received by the organisers of both events because they were designed to bring more people into the city and therefore benefit local tradespeople.
