“THEY don´t really do Sundays in Palma;everyone is at the beach and many of the best restaurants are closed...” This is a quote from an excellent travel feature on Palma which appeared in the Sunday Times, last weekend. The full page report under the headline “the Big Weekend”is fantastic promotion for Palma and Majorca but that sentence about Sundays bothers me. It rather sums up our capital city. Although it was not meant as a criticism I would say that the Palma City Council should take note. Palma, especially in the summer, needs to be open for business. In some ways the line “everyone is at the beach” works well but as we know, some restaurants in the winter are the first to moan about a lack of trade therefore perhaps they should take action and at least open for the tourist season on a Sunday. Ihad a fantastic day-out in the Cuidad Jardin area of Palma last Sunday, but there was no way I would venture into central Palma because everything is closed. While the city council has allowed Sunday opening, only a few stores have actually opened their doors. Palma has a Sunday feeling which in some ways is a shame because it is such a vibrant city. Marc Fosh, the top British chef who recently won a Michelin star for one of his restaurants, maintains that the local authorities should just concentrate on promoting Palma as a winter holiday destination. And of course he right. But we must get our act together and make sure that we are open.
