AS soon as winter arrives thoughts turn to the shortage of winter flights to Britain. Now, this is an issue I feel very strongly about because Ido sincerely believe that this island does have a future as a winter/sun holiday destination. Now, obviously the airlines continue to say that there is little demand for more links with Britain. Readers have said that they have travelled back to the United Kingdom on an empty aircraft and air faces are cheap. Now there are plenty of arguments for and against but the fact remains that 10 years ago there were scores of flights every week to British airports from Palma. Gradually over the years the tour firms pulled the plug on Majorca as a winter destination and that was the end of the story. But if there was demand then, there must be demand now. It makes no economic sense to me that there is not a single direct flight to Scotland over the winter months. Thousands of Scots own properties on the island and many must be considering selling because there are no flights. Now perhaps calls for the Balearics to establish its own airline maybe rather ambitious and perhaps it is too late but one thing is certain;if you can´t get to Majorca then the island will have no future. The local authorities are campaigning for a longer summer season and even winter opening. I believe in Majorca and its potential. It is not just a six month holiday destination, it is 12 month destination. It’s as simple as that.
