A TOTAL of 2,000 people have been charged and are awaiting trial for corruption offences and the police are investigating 150 separate cases of wrongdoing.
These astounding figures clearly underline the severe problem which exists in Spain at the moment with corruption among public officials. Amongst the high profile people who have been charged or questioned in the last year are the King of Spain´s sister, the Infanta Cristina, who is awaiting trial on tax fraud charges relating to her husband´s business dealings, the former President of the Balearic government, Jaume Matas, has been sentenced to prison on fraud charges joining his former political ally and President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Antonia Munar, who is already in Palma prison. The Infanta´s lawyers announced yesterday that they would appeal her court order.
