The Union, Progress and Democracy party in the Balearics yesterday proposed reducing the number of municipalities in the Balearics from the current 67 to just 16.
The party’s candidate for Parliament, Juan Antonio Horrach, explained that merging the region’s smaller municipalities would save the region some 267 million euros per year.
The new municipal map of the Balearics would feature 12 municipalities in Majorca, two in Minorca, one in Ibiza and another in Formentera.
What is more, the party also believes that the island councils should be scrapped, which would lead to hundreds of millions of more euros being saved.
Horrach explained that the power would lie with the Balearic government and the local councils, which would be granted some of the power currently enjoyed by the island councils which, according to Horrach, merely duplicates work at a significant and unnecessary cost to the Balearic public.
