The regional government considers the quality of water for swimmers to be a priority and has increased its spend on cleaning by over 100%.The Balearic Government has launched the annual campaign to keep bathing waters around the coasts of the Balearics clean and free of contamination. The Minister for Agriculture and the Environment, Gabriel Company, announced this year’s campaign yesterday, saying that 33 boats will be used until the end of September at a cost of 1.1 million euros.
One of the principal objectives of the campaign is to ensure that the waters by the islands’ beaches and coves do not have solid waste floating on them.
Of the 33 boats, 15 of them will operate in Majorca’s waters, while there will be eight for both Minorca and Ibiza and two for Formentera.
Last summer, minister Company noted, almost 47,000 kilos of waste were collected. Since 2004, he continued, the total removed from around the whole of the Balearic coastline amounts to nearly 1,900 tons.
