The Balearic region is eighth out of the regions of Spain in terms of its contribution to global presence. Catalonia makes the greatest contribution.According to a study by the Elcano Royal Institute, the Balearics make the eighth greatest contribution to Spain’s global presence among the seventeen autonomous communities and two autonomous cities of the country. This global presence is estimated according to three criteria: economic; military; and “soft” (defined as, for example, migration, tourism, scientific production and sports performance and its development). The presence does not, therefore, relate to a nation’s international power, influence or reputation but to the projection of these criteria to the global community.
Of the nineteen communities or cities, Catalonia is ranked in first place; it contributes 21.5% of Spain’s global presence. Madrid comes second with 19.5%, followed by Andalusia (12.9%), Valencia (8.95%) and the Basque Country with 5.95%. These five regions of Spain, therefore, represent almost 70% of the global presence.
