New palm trees for Palma

Palma Town Hall has launched a pilot project to replenish the stock of palm trees in three sites of special interest in the city. Specifically, the town hall intends to plant seven date palms by the side of the Parc de la Mar lake and one in the square in La Lonja plus two more at the Ses Voltes cultural centre which will be transplanted from the municipal nursery. These two trees should be moved within the next few days, while the others are scheduled to be planted in early June.
The project is referred to as a pilot as the town hall wants to assess the response of the trees to their being planted and their potential vulnerability to the “picudo rojo” red palm weevil. On the basis of studies of these trees, a decision will be taken regarding replenishment in other parts of the city. The project is also a small tribute to the parks and gardens service which tends to palm trees in all sorts of places across the city: the ones which, for decades, have given the corners of Palma their special character.
The service is responsible for ensuring that everything is done to ensure the proper conservation of the city’s palm trees, and to this end it  has been conducting risk analyses. The methodology for these analyses is now under revision, the analyses being made when the trees are pruned.
