The Spanish minister for the environment, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, suggested yesterday that a report by the Centre for Studies and Experimentation in Public Works (Cedex) into the oil prospecting project off the Balearics will be ready in two months.
This report is necessary in order to enable an environmental impact declaration to be made.
Cedex, by the way, is a government agency that is assigned to both the environment ministry and the ministry for development.
Declarations such as these are made by technicians, experienced in environmental impact, and if the declaration indicates that there would be an impact, then prospecting activity would not be authorised.
The minister said that the people of the Balearics should be relaxed about the report’s findings and the subsequent declaration, as the national government would ensure the maximum environmental guarantees.
However, the current central PPgovernment is in favour of Spain developing its own fuel industry.
