The outgoing President of the Balearics and leader of the Partido Popular, Jose Ramon Bauza, announced last night that he would stand down after the summer after his party suffered an election meltdown on Sunday.
Bauza said that the Partido Popular would be holding a congress after the summer but he would not be standing for reelection. The announcement last night was widely expected after the Partido Popular suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of numerous left-wing parties on Sunday.
Bauza will go down in local history as leading the party to a landslide victory four years ago but presiding over one of its biggest defeats last Sunday. A new left-wing coalition is expected to lead the Balearics but yesterday plans for the new government suffered blow after the parties failed to reach an accord over a new proposed tourist tax.
The Partido Popular will only run a small number of councils on the island after their massive defeat on Sunday, losing not just the local government but key councils such as Calvia, Inca and Manacor.
