The body of 33-year-old Gemma Vich Ramis was found by her mother, who lives in the same block of flats in the Sant Jordi neighbourhood of Palma, at 4.22am - Ramis had been beheaded.
She is the first fatal victim of domestic violence of the year in the Balearics and yesterday there was widespread condemnation and a minute’s silence was held by the local authorities in her memory.
The mother immediately raised the alarm and the National Police and paramedics were on the scene within minutes but sadly, there was nothing that could have been done to have saved the young woman’s life.
She had apparently been dead for a couple of hours and all that could be done was to confirm that the victim was dead. According to sources close to the investigation, when the police arrived on the scene they found the victim in a large pool of blood with her ex-partner next to her. There were two clear cuts to her neck, one minor one and another which had apparently cut her head off. The officers immediately arrested the ex-partner as the prime suspect.
The 38-year-old man stands charged with the murder of his ex-partner - the couple separated just 15 days ago. Officers also found a large knife used for slicing ham at the scene and the police are nearly 100 per cent sure that this was the murder weapon. Just over an hour later, a team of psychologists reached the scene to care for the mother, in particular, and the rest of the family and neighbours who were all in a state of severe shock.
